Signal audience

Signal audience

Definition

A signal audience is a Meta custom audience made of named companies that just showed a public reason to buy, matched by contact and company domain, and rebuilt every day as new signals fire and old ones age out.

A signal audience is a Meta custom audience made of named companies that just showed a public reason to buy, matched by contact and company domain, and rebuilt every day as new signals fire and old ones age out.

It's our term, and it names the thing that makes B2B Facebook ads work when nothing else does. Meta removed most of its job-title and detailed B2B targeting in 2024, so an agency that says it targets decision makers is guessing from profile fields. A signal audience doesn't guess. It's a list of the companies that just did the thing: posted the role, filed the permit, closed the round, signed the lease.

The list comes from the same monitoring that runs our outbound programs, across 26 industries, checked daily. It gets uploaded to Meta as a customer list, matched by business email, company domain, and page engagers where they exist, and refreshed every day. Companies drop off when the signal ages out and new ones come on as signals fire.

An example

A commercial roofer's signal audience on a given day is the owners and managers of the 40 buildings in its county that changed hands in the last 60 days, plus the 15 that got a permit last month, plus the owners of the 200 buildings that sat under Tuesday's hail path. Each group sees a different ad. None of them was found by targeting "property owners" as an interest.

How it differs from a lookalike

A signal audience is a list of companies with a dated reason to buy. A lookalike is Meta's guess at companies that resemble your customers. The first is narrower and books more meetings per dollar. The second is wider and catches what the first missed.
