Custom audience

Custom audience

Definition

A custom audience is a Meta ad audience built from data you provide, such as a customer list, pixel-tracked site visitors, or people who engaged with your page or ads, rather than from Meta's interest and demographic targeting.

A custom audience is a Meta ad audience built from data you provide, such as a customer list, pixel-tracked site visitors, or people who engaged with your page or ads, rather than from Meta's interest and demographic targeting.

Custom audiences are how B2B advertising on Meta works at all. Meta removed most detailed B2B targeting in 2024, so an agency that says it targets job titles is guessing from profile fields. A custom audience skips the guess. You tell Meta who, and Meta finds them.

The catch is match rate. Meta matches the list you upload against its users by email, phone, and name, and business emails match worse than personal ones because most people signed up for Facebook with a personal address. Adding the company domain, the company's Facebook page, and page engagers gets the match rate to a usable place for most mid-market lists.

An example

An MSP uploads a list of 300 companies in its metro that posted an IT admin job or hit a compliance deadline in the last 60 days: contact names, business emails, and company domains. Meta matches about a third by email and picks up more from the companies' pages. The result is a custom audience of a few hundred people at exactly the companies the MSP wants, and none of the 40,000 "small business owners" an interest audience would have produced.

The three we run

A signal audience, uploaded as a customer list from our monitoring. A retargeting audience, from the pixel and engagement. A lookalike, seeded from closed-won customers. Each is a custom audience of a different kind.
