Total addressable market (TAM)
Definition
Total addressable market is the full set of companies that could buy a product or service, expressed as a count or a dollar figure. For most B2B companies with large contracts it's a few thousand accounts, not millions.
Total addressable market is the full set of companies that could buy a product or service, expressed as a count or a dollar figure. For most B2B companies with large contracts it's a few thousand accounts, not millions.
The number matters for lead generation because it decides which tactics make sense. A TAM of ten million means search volume, content, and paid reach can carry the pipeline. A TAM of 4,000 means the search volume for what you sell is tiny, most of it comes from students and competitors, and a keyword with 12,000 searches a month is worth less than one with 40 searches that only buyers type.
Most B2B companies overestimate their TAM by counting every company in an industry, and then run tactics built for a market they don't have. The useful exercise is to count the companies that could actually sign a contract, and then work out how many of those will decide this quarter. That second number is usually a few hundred, and it's the one outbound has to find.
An example
A contract manufacturer that machines aluminum housings has a TAM of roughly 3,000 OEMs in North America that make products using them. Of those, maybe 150 will add or change a supplier this quarter. A program that emails all 3,000 with a capabilities pitch wastes 95 percent of its sends. A program that watches the 3,000 for product launches, sourcing hires, and reshoring moves finds the 150.
How it's used here
We ask for it on every fit call, because it tells us whether the signals in that industry produce enough companies a month to run a program, and whether the client's expectations about volume are realistic.
