Outbound for Ecommerce SaaS: Selling to Shopify Plus Brands (2026)

Outbound to Shopify Plus brands works when each email points at something you can see on the merchant's own store: the apps in their theme, their checkout, their shipping promise, their reviews. Plus merchants pay Shopify from $2,300 a month, so they have budget and an ecommerce team, but they hear from dozens of app vendors a week and ignore anything that could have gone to any store. Store Leads counts 81,794 Shopify domains on Shopify Plus as of October 2026, out of about 3.2 million live Shopify stores. That is a small, well-defined market, which is why a researched cold email program beats spraying the whole Shopify base.

Outbound for Ecommerce SaaS: Selling to Shopify Plus Brands (2026)

Quick answer

  • Build your list from Plus stores only, then filter by vertical, order volume signals and the apps they already run.
  • Write to the founder or CEO at brands under about 50 staff, and to the VP or director of ecommerce at larger ones.
  • Open every email with a fact from their storefront, such as a competitor app, a slow shipping promise or a gap in post-purchase.
  • Send most of your outreach between January and August; from September through Black Friday, Plus teams freeze code and stop taking new vendors.
  • Treat the brand's Shopify Plus agency as a second door, since many brands add apps on their agency's say-so.
  • Plan for about 1 meeting per 100 emails when you use a real store signal.

Who buys at a Shopify Plus brand

A Plus merchant can be a founder-led DTC brand with 15 people or a consumer goods company with a full digital team. The buying path is different at each end. At small brands the founder or CEO approves any app that costs real money and often replies personally. At larger brands the head of ecommerce owns the storefront and the app stack, a retention or CRM lead owns email, SMS and loyalty, operations owns fulfillment and the 3PL, and finance signs above a set threshold.

TitleWhat they care aboutHow to approach
Founder / CEOContribution margin, cash, growthOne margin number from their store
VP / director of ecommerceConversion rate, site speed, AOVA storefront gap you found
Head of retention / CRMRepeat rate, LTV, email and SMS revenuePost-purchase and repeat-order ideas
Director of ops / fulfillmentShipping cost, WISMO tickets, returnsTicket volume and claim handling

The person who installs your app is not always the person who pays for it. An ecommerce manager may run a free trial, but a product that changes checkout or margin will go to the founder or the VP, so write to that budget owner and copy nobody.

How Plus brands buy

The Shopify calendar

Black Friday and Cyber Monday decide the year for most consumer brands. Teams lock their themes and app stacks weeks before, so new tools that touch checkout or the storefront rarely get installed after September. January through spring is when brands review what broke during peak and look for replacements. Shopify also releases new platform features twice a year in its Editions, and changes to checkout and apps often push brands to re-check their stack.

The App Store and badges

Merchants check your App Store listing before they reply. Built for Shopify status gives an app a badge, a search ranking boost and the option to target App Store ads by merchant plan, according to Shopify's developer docs. Plus brands also look for apps in Shopify's Plus partner directory. If you have neither, show Plus logos and a named reference instead.

Agencies and migrations

Most Plus brands work with a Shopify Plus agency for theme work, migrations and app installs. When a brand moves to Plus from Salesforce Commerce Cloud, Magento or BigCommerce, the agency usually recommends a stack, and the brand often buys from that shortlist. Partnering with three or four agencies in your category gives you a steady source of referrals, and cold email to agency owners is a good way to start those talks.

Where to find accounts and timing signals

Use a store database such as Store Leads or BuiltWith to pull Plus domains, then layer on signals. You can check each of these from outside the company.

  • A store recently moved to Shopify Plus from another platform, so the stack is still being chosen.
  • A competitor app was removed from the theme in the last 60 days, or a weak one is still installed.
  • The brand posted a job for an ecommerce manager, retention lead or ops manager, which means a new owner for the budget.
  • Funding, a retail launch or a wholesale program shows up on the press page or in Shopify B2B settings.
  • New international storefronts or currencies suggest they will need shipping, duties or returns tools.
  • Reviews or social replies complain about lost packages, slow refunds or out-of-stock items.

Building a Plus list step by step

  1. Export Plus domains from your store database and drop stores outside the countries you serve.
  2. Filter by vertical, since apparel, beauty, food and home goods each have their own return rates, shipping problems and app stacks.
  3. Remove brands already running your app or a direct competitor installed in the last six months.
  4. Find the founder, ecommerce lead and ops lead for each brand, and check that each person still works there.
  5. Note one storefront fact per brand before any email is written. If you cannot find one, the brand goes to a later batch.

This takes longer than buying a list of 'Shopify Plus decision-makers', but it is what lets the first line of each email be true and specific.

Messaging that works

Plus operators talk about conversion rate, AOV, contribution margin, repeat rate and WISMO (where is my order) tickets, so use those terms and name something on their store that you actually looked at.

PersonaAngleProof they want
FounderMargin per orderA brand at their size
Ecommerce leadConversion and speedBefore-and-after on a Plus store
Retention leadSecond-order rateRevenue from post-purchase
Ops leadFewer tickets and claimsSupport volume change

Example 1: founder at a supplement brand

Subject: Northfield Labs checkout

Hi Priya, I placed a test order on Northfield Labs this week, and there's no package protection at checkout.

For supplement brands, lost and stolen packages turn into reships you pay for.

Our app lets customers buy protection at checkout and handles the claims, so reships stop hitting your margin.

Worth 15 min in January, after peak?

Follow-up, 2-3 days later: Bumping this. Happy to send a mockup of your checkout with protection on it.

Example 2: new VP of ecommerce on Plus

Subject: Halden Outdoor order page

Hey Marcus, congrats on the new VP of Ecommerce role at Halden Outdoor.

Your order status page still links out to the carrier, which most Plus brands fix in their first few months.

We put tracking, reorder offers and support deflection on that page, built for Plus checkout.

Can I send a mockup on your theme?

Follow-up, 2-3 days later: Bumping this. Want that mockup before the January sale?

Both are anonymized patterns. Each opens with one fact you checked (a test order, a new role), stays short, makes one small ask and gets a one-line bump 2-3 days later. A made-up test order gets caught quickly.

What to avoid

  • Sending app-install links in the first email; Plus teams treat them as spam.
  • Claiming results on 'Shopify stores' when your proof comes from small non-Plus shops.
  • Pitching in October and November, when you will be remembered as the vendor who ignored peak.
  • Writing to the agency and the brand on the same day without telling either.
  • Leading with a free trial instead of a margin or conversion number.

Route: what this looked like in practice

Route sells post-purchase package protection and tracking to ecommerce brands, and its Shopify listing has been live since January 2019. We wrote research-led cold email to brands where a store-level fact showed a shipping or post-purchase problem. The program produced 117 opportunities in a single month and $42M in ARR pipeline over three quarters.

Channels and sequence

  1. Email 1 to the budget owner with one storefront observation and a short ask.
  2. Email 2 four days later with a second observation or a comparable brand.
  3. LinkedIn connection to the ecommerce lead with no pitch in the request.
  4. Email 3 to a second persona, such as ops if you first wrote to ecommerce.
  5. A partner email to the brand's agency, if you know it, offering to help their client.

Our cold email statistics show 82% of positive replies come from the first email, and CEOs at small companies are about three times more likely than VPs to reply positively. For founder-led Plus brands, that makes the founder the best first target. Reply rates to Google Workspace inboxes ran 1.35% versus 0.29% for Microsoft 365, so check which one a brand uses before you judge a campaign. In our campaigns we see about 1 meeting per 100 emails on strong store signals, 1 per 200 on generic messages, and 1 per 500 in the worst case.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling every Shopify store instead of the Plus list, then wondering why nobody has budget.
  • Writing the same note to brands in apparel, beauty and furniture, which have very different returns and shipping problems.
  • Ignoring your App Store reviews, which every prospect will read before replying.
  • Selling to the ecommerce coordinator who cannot approve anything.
  • Stopping outreach for all of Q4 instead of booking January meetings in early November with peak-aware copy.

How IntentSignal fits

IntentSignal is a B2B cold email agency for companies with $10K+ contract values and a sales team, which fits Shopify apps and ecommerce SaaS selling annual plans to Plus brands. Our research agents read each brand's storefront, apps and hiring before writing, and the two co-founders run every account. You own every domain and mailbox in writing, and programs start at $2,999 a month, month to month. Compare that to the rest of the market on our cold email agency pricing page or in our agency vs in-house SDR breakdown. To map your first 90 days of Plus outreach, book a campaign plan call.

Frequently asked questions

How many brands are on Shopify Plus?

Shopify does not publish a Plus merchant count. Store Leads counted 81,794 Shopify domains on Plus in October 2026; some brands run several domains, so the number of companies is lower.

How much does Shopify Plus cost?

Shopify's pricing page lists Plus from $2,300 a month on a term commitment, plus card processing fees. Brands paying that have an ecommerce budget, which is why Plus is a good filter for SaaS outbound.

Who should I email at a Shopify Plus brand?

The founder or CEO at smaller brands, and the VP or director of ecommerce at larger ones. Add retention or ops leads when your product affects email, SMS, shipping or returns.

When is the worst time to sell to Shopify brands?

From late September through Cyber Monday. Teams freeze their sites for peak season. Book meetings for January in early November instead.

Does Built for Shopify status help outbound?

Yes. The badge and App Store ranking boost give prospects a reason to trust you when they check your listing after reading your email.

Should I sell through Shopify Plus agencies?

Use both. Agencies often shape the stack after a migration, so a few agency partners can feed you deals, while direct outreach covers brands already live on Plus.
